Tessa's Guide to Decluttering
Decluttering
Things to get rid of:
Makeup- I LOVE makeup and find it hard to get rid of any. I went through a phase where I was constantly buying makeup, especially eyeshadow palettes. Makeup is not cheap either, so I don’t want to just throw it away, even if I haven’t used it in a few months. So, what I like to do is either:
A. Give it to a friend if it has been used a lot.
B. Or B. Sell it on Poshmark or Facebook Market Place if it has never been used or even just once or twice (just be sure to include in the description it has been used).
Clothes- Clothes, for me at least, is something that adds up fast. I feel like every few months I find myself at Plato’s Closet selling my clothes. Clothes can be something hard to part with. I always find myself thinking I have needed this once before what if I need it again? The key is to go into the clearing out not thinking like that. Instead I try to tell myself either how good my closet is going to look or (and maybe this isn’t the best way to look at it) how there will be room for new pieces. Depending on the current size of your wardrobe this decluttering process could take a while. The most effective was is really just going one piece of a time. With each piece I ask myself three questions,
• Is this considered a basic that I need in my closet (2-3 pairs of denim, neutral colored tees and camis, etc.)?
• Is this a piece that I have worn in two months or I see myself wearing in 3 months (If its august you may not have worn your favorite teal sweater lately)
• Did I buy this for a specific occasion coming up (Dress for someone’s wedding, a new pair of shorts for when I go on vacation in a month)
Accessories- The term accessories for what I am using it for is a very broad term. I am going to be referring to both home accessories and jewelry. They both kind of have the same declutter process. Only keep what you need! You do not need 7 throw pillows nor do you need 7 silver colored necklaces. Keep only what you use! For me I am not a huge jewelry person. I have a few simple diamond studs, just a couple of necklaces, and maybe 2 or 3 bracelets. I know those numbers aren’t going to be the same universal, some people love jewelry! But just go through what you have and get rid of the pieces you do not wear. Before I decluttered my jewelry, I had friendships necklaces from so long ago I had no idea who had the other half! Same goes with home decorating pieces. You do not need a lot to create your space. There is no sense of you keeping that white basket you have yet to put to use. If you are not using it now you more than likely never will. If absolute worst-case scenario you can always get another.
Extras- DVDs, magazines, instructions, old mail, CDs, you know all those things just shoved in draws or tucked away in the back of your closet. I mean let’s be honest with things like Hulu and Netflix you really do not reach for a DVD too often anymore. Same idea with magazines, with resources like YouTube, Pinterest, and Google what is the point of having those old magazines laying around?
